Otoplasty

What is otoplasty?

Otoplasty is a surgical procedure to reshape a malformed ear. Dr. Sokoya can perform otoplasty in children and adults at different stages of ear development, depending on the nature of your condition and the techniques needed to repair it.

You might be a candidate for otoplasty if you have an ear malformation from birth, if your ears stick out too far, or if you experience damage to your ear from trauma or cancer.

Mask-wearing during the COVID-19 pandemic is also causing an increase in auricular malformations (abnormally shaped ears) in both children and adults.

What can I expect during my otoplasty consultation?

During your initial consultation for otoplasty, Dr. Sokoya spends time reviewing your medical history, your current medications, and the severity of your ear malformation.

He takes preoperative (before) photos during your evaluation to document your progress after surgery.

What happens during otoplasty?

To repair damage and improve the appearance of your ear, Dr. Sokoya performs a short, simple surgical procedure. He can change the shape, position, or size of your ears using advanced surgical techniques.

Making incisions in the natural creases of your ears or on the backside of your ears minimizes your risk for noticeable scars. Dr. Sokoya can remove excess cartilage or skin and reshape your ear before closing the incision with stitches.

How long does it take to recover from otoplasty?

Otoplasty is an outpatient procedure, and you can expect to go home soon after it’s complete to recover.

Dr. Sokoya can help you manage any discomfort or pain you experience and continues to monitor your healing progress during a postoperative appointment. He can remove your bandages within a few days and determine when it’s safe for him to take out your stitches.

To take the pressure off your ears when sleeping, you might need to sleep on your side. You should also wear button-down shirts to avoid having to pull clothing over your ears as you heal.
